Lake Worth High graduate (class '60) Paul Darst sent this photo taken in 1937 of his grandfather fishing at the beach.
I remember as a kid fishing off the Lake Worth beach, a time when there were not as many people inhabiting our city or even Florida for that matter. In the 1950's, there was about 2.7 million people in the entire state. Now we have a little over 19 million. Back in those days, you knew most everyone in town. Fishing is no longer allowed at the beach.
We used to fish at what is now called Kreusler Park where no one ever went, tossing out our lines hoping to catch anything. In the evening, you would always see men and children dotting the shore with their lines and tackle boxes. This was back in the days when unique and beautiful shells also could be found, intact. We also fished off the old Lake Worth bridge but that was not near as much fun as fishing in the Atlantic.
Great photo. I remember there was that store in Lake Worth, I think called Herbs. Herb Goodman, Huddy Goodman, class 60. Her dads store. He was a surf fisherman too. He caught sharks from shore as there was a picture of him in his store. It made the newspapers. He had jars of big snakes and jaws bones of sharks in the store front.
ReplyDeleteIt was Huddy's Dad. Great store especially when we were little kids...awesome stuff to see. He was a big hero to us kids.
ReplyDeleteMr. Goodman and my grandfather were friends. I remember his store and his shark-fishing exploits. Huddy's dad, right.
