Historic Preservation in Lake Worth and Lisa Maxwell

Comment Up
It goes without saying, most all of us believe in historic preservation. In just two more years, Lake Worth celebrates its 100th birthday. In time for that event, will be our newly built Casino to reflect its history in its design by capturing the essence of its original 1922 style. The majority of people believe that to be very important.

Back in July 2006 Helen Greene got it right when she was a member of the Planning & Zoning Board. Back then the P&Z Board members also sat on the Historic Preservation Board. The two boards consisted of the same members. She said, "I don't want to denigrate what was done here, but (the design) wasn't done in a very scholarly way." Mrs. Greene was speaking of three story 12-unit townhouses that a developer wanted to build on property where two historic homes were situated on Federal Highway.

There was one lone member on the Board who had no use for historic properties and wanted to make way for developers, after all, working for developers was and still is her profession.

Who was it? Lisa Maxwell, candidate for Mayor, wanted to demolish these houses.

The P&Z said "no" and denied the site plan as well with two board members dissenting, one of whom was, you guessed it, Lisa Maxwell. Frank Palen was the attorney for the developer and a former Chair of the Planning & Zoning Historic Preservation Board. Wes Blackman, board member commented, "We're balancing the old versus the new here; we are a city that was built in the 20's, 30's and 40's and we need to reflect that in our major thoroughfares.

The Planning and Zoning Board has come a long way. We now have a separate Historic Preservation Board, another watchdog for Lake Worth, in order to preserve our history and to ensure that historic properties do not get demolished just for favored developers or for development sake. This Board consists of Chair, Manuel Occhiogrosso an architect and Dorothy Block an Archaeologist, to name a few.

It's very important to preserve and protect our history in Lake Worth. All candidates running for election should make historical preservation a top priority. Let's ask Lisa Maxwell if she has had a metamorphosis.

  1. Nothing has changed. Doesn't she want development as well as heights going up?

  2. Where and when did she say she's for developement and heights going up? Please provide a quote. Or anything to back up your claim.
There hasn't been any developement in the city in 5 years and the naysayers are still using the "evil developer" attack. It's worked out so well. The city looks great, is flush with money, attracting lots of new young families to invest and live in the city. Good thing those evil developers didn't pave over the city like they wanted.

  3. I can't recall Lisa coming out on height limits within our city, at least not during a campaign. It would take a lot of research while she was on the P&Z to support the above comment. I can certainly see why someone would believe that, however. It gets back to the perception is reality theory. Let's find out if Lisa supports the new heights as presented by Jennings for our Comp Plan. Someone ask her.

  4. I'm not a developer and I voted for a Charter amendment that allows us to build 6 stories East of Dixie and up to 10 stories West of Dixie.

Why don't you "keep Lake Worth a low rise community" types put it to the voters AGAIN? Maybe the outcome would be different.

Until then, why don't we .... say.... go with what our Charter says..... about ANYTHING?

And as far as Maxwell is concerned... we were in a development mode back when Romano had his first term. We were behind Delray Beach, but keeping up. Then we changed directions with the BCE. Delray kept going and look what they have to show for it!

    Let's keep Lake Worth "affordable".

  5. When was the Charter amendment?

Your post was ok until you ended up being a smart guy with the BCE stuff. People want a low rise community. They said so in the Master Plan process and I WAS here for that. You know that, Wes. Another thing, we don't want to look like Delray. What ever gave you that impression?

  6. In your opinion, what was the best commission ever? Was it Romano? Was it Clemens? Was it Ramiccio? Give one reason why you think so.

  7. I don't think you are asking me... but since you asked, I believe the commission headed up by Romano (the first term) when he changed the police and fire departments to allow outside searches for qualified chiefs with new ideas. He ushered in a redevelopment of Lake Worth that has not ever been seen here before, and given the makeup of our leaders, will probably not be seen in the future.

He also instigated the Snook Island project with Newell, bringing our intracoastal waterway back from the dead zone.

He was able to handle Cara.

He did the initial work on the Lake, Lucerne Avenues and Dixie and Federal reconstruction, although TR likes to take credit for it.

I believe Lynn thinks the BCE was the past one with Cara as the default leader. Lord knows Varela or Clemens couldn't lead out of a paper bag.

This is even though she disagrees with the illegal hiring hall, chickens and Earth First extremism.

With her recent posts, it can be assumed she supports Cara's pick, Waterman for Mayor. So sets up the yin and yang, the ebb and flow, the Dark and the light.

The dark side... which is also known as the anarchist alliance, is quite possibly set to seize more of the great power that is (((((((Lake Worth Politics)))))

  8. Well since I am attributed to the BCE, no one really knows what you guys are talking about now do you? I have always said Cara was right on target many times--that is far from perfect and far from the best commission ever. She at least had no other interest but humankind. It was never about lining her pockets.

Not sure who started that expression but obviously it was some wise guy. The BCE, to me, is a commission that is honest, non corruptible and there only for the greater good of this city and no other reason. It's not there for pay to play. It's not to give favors to friends. It is not to allow developers to take over this city, our beach or any other asset. It is to keep our city small and people who respect our history.

I am also not a great one for outsourcing, something we have been doing especially when we turned over our police and fire to the County. It was something a past commission did when it voted to be a buyer of water rather than a supplier. It was past commissions that literally "sold" off our city. It was past commissions that allowed the Unions anything they asked without negotiating for our taxpayers. Again, votes made for favored friends that were detrimental to our city. These contracts were not signed by recent mayors.

One thing Cara did do was keep the beach public and not sell it off or lease it off and privatize it as Romano tried to do. He tried to get a hotel on our beach and sell it off to Pugliese. He was responsible for The Lucerne.

As far as my recent posts are concerned, I do not know Waterman. She is a new entity to me and therefore I can't speak to her. On the other hand, I have seen Ramiccio and Maxwell in action. I would prefer putting my money on a likable candidate (at least Ramiccio is a pleasant guy when you talk to him)--not a bully and not someone who shoots off her mouth about stuff for which she has no clue. She is, afterall, not writing a blog. :)

Incidentally, the "dark side," is anything but my side, whatever that is. I vote for the person no matter what side he/she might be affiliated with. The dark side is certainly not the present commission. The dark side consists of all those trying to destroy all the great things happening right now within our city. We have good people elected as well as appointed. No one is an anarchist that I know other than Cara Jennings who says that she is. I don't even believe that. She is a Socialist maybe and I have no use for that philosophy. It still doesn't make her a bad person. If you put Cara with two of the present candidates side by side, anyone would choose Cara any day of the week. She is a sweet girl and smart as a whip--most of the time. She knows her stuff.

  9. Wow. Cara has you snookered. What has she done to improve the quality of life of the LW immigrants she claims to support? They are living in horrible conditions in slum housing. Sr. Rachel had to close her literacy program due to a lack of funding. What did Cara do to help her? The Mentoring Center closed. What has Cara done to help the people it served? Cara does not care about you, the immigrants, or the city. She hates government and is working to destroy it in a devious way. She is a master of manipulation. And, you have been manipulated into believing her deception.

  10. No, it is you that has been "snookered" by believing that Cara Jennings is all evil.

As far as the immigrants are concerned, they must believe that they are better off then they were or they would go home.

As far as Sister Rachel is concerned, she is a typical religious person. Churches are a big part of the illegal immigration problem here and around the country. If churches can't get funding for their support of illegal immigration, how can one little person do it?

If anyone has been manipulated it is you for believing all the crap.

  11. Sorry Lynn, but I have to agree with Anno above. You have drank the koolaide and are definitely feeling the effects.

Cara, a Socialist? She has actively protested against our country and its attempts to secure our borders. She has openly protested against our only ally in the middle east with half of the muslim world trying to drive the only democracy into the sea.

Evil? I don't know, but definitely misguided. Smart? Ya, I guess.... she sure has you fooled.

Just give me the name of ONE successful country that believes in her kind of governance.... just one.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I will answer your last question--the other one regarding fooling me is just plain horse crap.
There is no country that has survived under Socialism. Right now, this country is not doing so hot either. As far as Cara against Israel, she was protesting the killing of a friend of hers...not Israel. You people twist everythimg around.

  13. The Branding Committee said that Delray is one town we'd like to emulate. Where's the disconnect. Have you aver been to downtown Delray at night?

We don't want to look like that?

    ReplyDelete
  14. They nevers said that was a city that they wanted to "emulate." They used that as one of the cities that has a marketing plan that they will use as a tool.

We want a small city charm here.
