Fetterman reaffirms Democratic label while dodging the 51st-vote question

Sen. John Fetterman insisted he remains a Democrat at a Texas festival while refusing to say how he would cast a potential tie-breaking vote if his party reaches 51 seats.

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman closed the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Saturday by defending his place inside the Democratic Party after repeated breaks with colleagues on foreign policy and open outreach to Republicans.

The Hill reported that CBS News moderator Major Garrett pressed him on party loyalty and on whether he would deliver the decisive vote if Democrats win a 51-seat Senate majority this November. Fetterman would not commit.

“Let’s revisit after the midterms, and let’s see what happens, you know, if I happen to be 51. I don’t know,” Fetterman said.

That answer leaves both parties guessing about the one senator who has spent the year voting with Republicans on core national-security questions while still claiming the Democratic brand.
