Former Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro is mounting a sweeping legal effort to derail the federal drug-trafficking case against him, arguing that American courts have no authority to prosecute him.

Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, asked a federal judge in Manhattan on Wednesday to dismiss the charges against them, according to court documents reviewed by Fox News Digital.

At the center of Maduro’s defense is the claim that he remains Venezuela’s lawful head of state and is therefore protected by sovereign immunity. “No American court has ever presided over the criminal trial of a foreign leader who was recognized by their own country as the sitting head of state at the time the charges were brought,” Maduro’s attorneys wrote.
