Sen. John Fetterman called the Democratic Party "an orgy of socialism" after far-left candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani swept Democratic primaries in the city, ousting incumbents and defeating centrist challengers in races that have forced an uncomfortable reckoning inside the party.

Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat who has increasingly broken with his caucus, did not hold back. In a post on X dated June 24, 2026, and in a subsequent interview with Fox News, he described the winning candidates as anti-American radicals and questioned why he stands alone among Senate Democrats in refusing to defend them.

The primary results, and the reaction from figures like Fetterman and longtime Democratic strategist James Carville, expose a fault line that the party's leadership has tried to paper over for years.

The question now is whether the Democratic establishment can hold its coalition together, or whether the socialist wing has already taken the wheel.
