President Trump and First Lady Melania showed up for the premiere of Melania, the documentary that follows the 20 days before his second inauguration. The red carpet was busy and the cameras were rolling, which means the press was ready to lob questions that needed answering.The film has sparked attention because of the big money involved and the usual media circus followed every step of the way. A New York Times reporter walked up with the predictable question about Amazon paying to acquire the movie. The reporter claimed large sums were spent to make and market the film and wanted Trump to react to Amazon’s reported purchase amount.
It is the kind of gotcha moment the press likes when a big check gets mentioned and the obvious follow up is whether the payment is fair or political.
When the reporter pressed, Trump did not play along. He interrupted to ask who was asking the question and then dismissed that outlet as Fake News.
It was classic Trump style: blunt, not polite, and aimed at taking the air out of the room. He made it clear he recognized the theater of questions and refused to be boxed into a scripted answer.
