Payments went to Dead People and Illegals

Report Reveals $5.8 Billion in ‘Questionable’ Payments to Dead Tenants and Non-Citizens Under Biden

There’s an old saying about trust: it takes years to build and seconds to destroy.

The same might be said of taxpayer dollars—earned through sweat and sacrifice, collected by a government that promises to spend them wisely, and supposedly directed toward those who genuinely need help. Most Americans accept that some of their hard-earned money will go toward keeping vulnerable neighbors housed. That’s the deal we make.

But here’s the thing about deals: they only work when both sides hold up their end. What happens when the people entrusted with billions simply stop paying attention? Or worse, what if they never really cared to begin with?

A damning new report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development answers that question in devastating detail. According to HUD’s Agency Financial Report for fiscal year 2025, approximately $5.8 billion in federal rental assistance went to “questionable” recipients during fiscal year 2024 alone—out of roughly $50 billion distributed that year.

Let that sink in: more than one in ten dollars went somewhere it probably shouldn’t have.
