Vice President JD Vance packed an arena with 10,000 roaring students at the University of Mississippi on October 29 as he stepped directly into Charlie Kirk's shoes — taking unscripted questions from college kids exactly like his assassinated friend did for years.
The emotional Ole Miss event marked Erika Kirk's only scheduled tour stop and Vance's first major appearance with Turning Point USA since Kirk was murdered September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University.
Students lined up in pouring rain starting early that morning, many waiting hours outside The Pavilion at Ole Miss hoping to get inside.
Security turned away roughly 5,000 people who couldn't fit in the 9,500-seat arena after organizers crammed extra chairs onto the floor.¹ Another 13,000 adults who registered were told not to bother coming because every seat was needed for students.
"Friendship is not just about telling everybody what they want to hear," Vance said. "It's about having the trust in another human being that you can tell them they're wrong and actually encourage them to change their mind."
"My job as Vice President is not to look out for the interests of the whole world, it's to look out for the people of the United States," Vance declared to massive applause.
