First Democratic House Member Urges Henry Cuellar To Step Down

In an unprecedented move, a Democratic House member has called for the resignation of another due to federal conspiracy and bribery charges.

On Friday, Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota became the first House Democrat to formally request the resignation of Rep. Henry Cuellar (D) of Texas, and his request follows a detailed federal indictment outlining serious charges against Cuellar, as Axios reports.

Cuellar, a long-serving member of Congress, and Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey are currently the only sitting members of Congress under indictment. Both are facing severe legal challenges that could impact their political careers.

The Justice Department's indictment against Cuellar is extensive, spanning 54 pages. It accuses him of accepting nearly $600,000 in bribes from sources including an Azerbaijani government-controlled oil company and a Mexican bank.
