Boynton backs ban on offshore oil drilling, seismic airgun blasting
Boynton Beach is only ten years behind Lake Worth in banning off-shore drilling.In 2009, the Lake Worth City commission passed Resolution 60-2009 which opposed the approval of oil drilling in Florida's waters in areas other than those already approved for oil leasing and oil exploration.
On the Lake Worth commission in 2009 were Mayor Rene Varela, Vice Mayor Jo-Ann golden, Commissioners Scott Maxwell, Cara Jennings and Suzanne Mulevhill.

I thought Governor DiSantis and Senator Scott banned off-shore drilling in Florida.

ReplyDeleteOff shore drilling would be the most ignorant thing we as South Floridians could entertain as allowable in our future.People that want this, either have no background in science, or their "science" has been corrupted by Grants, bribes or the free flowing monies of liars and thieves. Anyone who would like the REAL SCIENCE on why we can not allow offshore drilling, I would do this discussion in person....and afterwards, you will be explaining to others why this can not be allowed.

ReplyDeleteI thought fracking had made us the top oil producing nation in the world. If that is true, why is offshore drilling always being considered. I think X in the equation here is greed.

ReplyDeleteWell then, why do they continue to destroy whole parts of the country fracking, and then saying we're the top oil producer due to fracking. In fact, if we are the top oil producer, why do we have to continue to have this infernal relationship with the Saudis?

Where offshore drilling occurs, typically into a salt Dome containing oil, the drilling company begins penetrating a thick and previously impermeable barrier, generally with many different drill holes. Regardless of how careful they may be, fracturing this ends the impermeable seal , and from then on, oozing of oil will find it's way out of the fracture sites from the drills. Who among you does not understand how oil spreading over our coral reefs will not cause massive die offs of corals and fish....who among you does not see that this would not decimate the fisheries, and poison the people eating the fish left sick but not dead from its pollution. Palm Beach County has one of the largest live coral reef tracts in the western hemisphere, and this is a large part of why the fishing is so good off of palm beach. Kill our coral reefs, and you kill off the fishing and the tourism. The beaches begin to become tar pits you can't walk on without spending an hour cleaning your feet off later.... using nasty chemicals you don't really want on your skin........ America has huge oil deposits presently being developed, and does not need the relatively small deposits that would be possible in our Salt domes, off shore. It certainly does not need to kill off Florida Tourism, and it does not need to destroy our ocean environment. Show me a scientist that says it is safe, and I will show you a liar that is being paid well, and this will be proven easily enough.

ReplyDeleteIf I need to, I will get underwater videos of comparable drill sites and show the damage done. These are lies like those of the prostitutes of Tobacco Science that declared to the world that smoking cigarettes was not bad for your health. I would expect most of the drill sites to be deep....there are some salt domes in 300 to 400 feet deep--depths accessible to tech divers with video cameras, but for the 500 to 1000 or more depths where they could be drilling, the damage they do has been safe from prying eyes because tech divers can't really be useful for this....But as it happens, to protect us, we have several Environmentalists with Triton Submarines--these beauties are great for videos and covering lots of territory to many thousands of feet deep....and the owners of these subs would not sit back and let drilling destroy our reefs, without showcasing the damage it was doing with video, and then destroying the companies and politicians responsible. For any with their minds open to the FACTS of offshore Drilling Risk...here is a good example of the Risk ...the way the Oil companies see the risk..Risk assessment is inherent in drilling--danger and risk potentials to shareholders and profits are the metrics used to determine if they should drill..or not. This is NEVER about will they, or will they not injure the ocean ecosystem in the vicinity of the drilling--it is "assessment" of potential costs versus potential profits....Again, it does not portray a safe future to the environment—just a betting game that more profits can be extracted than losses from environmental accidents requiring mitigation expenses.

Show me an example of where a politician allows drilling at an offshore site, and I will show you a politician that either is not intelligent enough to understand the implications of the scientific assessment( common enough) or we will be looking at a politician that believes the the value of the environment is less important than the value to him/her (and constituents or financial supporters) than the hard to define value of the marine environment in question....Where a healthy marine environment is a primary driver of the region where the drilling would take place--as in the Tourism and Fishing grounds of South Florida, there is no SAFE WAY to drill....there is only the manner of mitigation for spills and accidents that could occur.
While my previous post showing the RISK ASSESSMENT plans and problems is more important for my Lake Worth neighbors to read - to appreciate the failure of the Media to accurately convey the "meaning" of Offshore Drilling in our area...... THIS Post is worth a read after, as it showcases the threats of past and present offshore drilling disasters, and also explains why nothing worth noting has changed since the BP spill that destroyed so much of Louisiana's marine environment, seafood industry, tourism --as well as the carcinogenic effect it is already having on the residents of this area.

This is NOT about Trump....this is about MAGA..and what it "should be".
Trump can easily have BAD advisors in the area of RISK ASSESSMENT for offshore drilling in our area....But my understanding of Trump's Environmental policies, is that Trump believes each state is best able to determine it's proper environmental protections, not the Federal, so at this moment, I am expecting the threat of Offshore Drilling to us, as being dealt with by Ron DeSantis, a guy that should definitely understand the risks, and that should protect Palm Beach from this threat.

We used to make an effort to use less oil. There are a few well-meaning people who buy Hybrid Vehicles, but from what I see, the cars and trucks get bigger and bigger.
ReplyDeleteIt's like the saying: Do you want to do this the hard way, or the easy way. There is no question in my mind that Americans will pick the easy way. The only problem is that there is no easy way out of our dilemma.
As to there being "another side" to the safety of offshore drilling for oil off of the palm beach coast, there actually is not.
ReplyDeleteThere are articles that develop the prevalence of "oil seeps" that occur naturally in many places around the world, and including the Gulf Coast....Texas, Louisiana , even West Coast of Florida.... But there has never been natural seeps off of the East Coast of Florida, and if we had experienced these oil seeps on our coast, we would not have our extensive coral reefs, both the ones you may have heard of, or the much larger DEEP coral reefs from 500 feet deep to 1500 feet deep, that make up a large portion of the nursery grounds for so many of our fisheries.
In point of fact, were the oil companies allowed to drill off of our coast, whether in 300 feet of water or a thousand or more, massive die offs would occur to our marine ecosystem--and you must know that our ecosystem off of Palm beach and Fort Pierce and Broward, is not even remotely similar to that of the West coast of Florida. Only uneducated politicians or Oil Company executives could suggest that more benefit than risk would be involved with oil drilling off of the East coast of Florida.... And...by the way...We "do" have Salt Domes in our deep water...and I have done tech dives over several of them...Much too deep for 99% of scuba divers, but these exist in places where there are rich and intense marine ecosystems thriving, ecosystems that would be catastrophically destroyed by fractures in the salt domes, and oil seeping that would have to result.
See for yourself the extensive hard and soft coral reefs of Lake Worth...reefs that would be destroyed along with all the fish that live in and around them, should Oil drilling leak oil into this ecosystem.

Oil companies would not deny this result of a spill...all they will do is try to make it seem less likely than it really would be, and to discuss the ways they would make monetary BRIBES to the county and the state should a spill occur....when a spill occurs. When you look at oil company risk assessments, and the record of offshore drilling platforms to NEVER LEAK OIL....it becomes clear they would expect South Florida Oil Drilling to result in some major spills or seepage, and that they would expect the profits to be so large that they could get the state and county governments to embrace the mitigation payments AS WORTH IT!!!!
