Today, there was a Board of County Commission public hearing regarding the above upzoning for Wawa that will be situated on 4.2 acres. The site currently is Multiple Use Planned Development (MUPD). The applicant requested Commercial High.
The applicant, Atlantic Land Management, Inc. asked for approval to allow a Type I
Restaurant and a Convenience Store with Gas Sales. This applicant gave campaign contributions to every commissioner running for office even the failed campaign of Shelley Vana.
Members of the public spoke in opposition citing concerns regarding increased traffic, compatibility with adjacent homes and the number of gas stations already built along Hypoluxo Road. Those residents in the chamber spoke overwhelming against this project.
That didn't matter to the commission. They voted 5/1 to approve with Mary Lou Berger dissenting. Paulette Burdick had left the room by the time the vote was taken. This vote is no surprise and the commission has fallen in step approving of every developer request that has appeared before them over the last 8 years.
Today was a very dark day for Government in Palm Beach County. It's very important to support our fellow neighbors and neighborhoods when issues arise that affect their quality of life. The issue about the corner of Hypoluxo and High Ridge Road is not about a WaWa coming in. It is about a zoning and land change. Unfortunately ,the Palm beach County Commission went against the wishes of the vast majority of people and changed the zoning and land use on the parcel to heavy commercial. This type of zoning is supposed to be forbidden next to a residential area. All of the protections that the County is supposed to have in place for it's residents were thrown out today. The county doesn't even follow it's own rules. So,it was not about WaWa . It was about following the rule of law and the will of the people.
ReplyDeletePlain and simple our elected do not listen to us or care what we want. But will people vote them out? It is a sin they all took money from this developer and then vote in favor of it, this is so unethical. I am so ashamed of our elected in this city, county, state, and country. Shameful!
ReplyDeleteI just can't wait for those big tactor trailers and those pickup trucks towing 25' boats to fill up and then try to turn into High Ridge to exit and block both residential lanes of traffic because their rigs are too long to make the turn into Hypoluxo and wait for the traffic light to change. This is all very screwed up, and the developer is a greedy piece of Boca slime. Vote these county commissioner bastards out of office for destroying yet again another residential neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for some Pedestrians to get run over by the newly approved high volume of traffic darting into and out of this location - this neighborhood doesn't even have sidewalks, people have to walk in the street.
I can't imagine where these houses at High Ridge and Hypoluxo are that you are talking about. There are 3 empty lots and a gas station. I don't remember this kind of fuss about Race Track, which are all over the place. People seem to like them. You won't get much support in boycotting WAWA. Just a little background for you. WAWA is a farm in Delaware County, PA, just outside of Philly. They were always known for their superior dairy products. Everything changes of course, but I still think you will find WAWA a cut above. The saying "I LOVE MY WAWA" didn't come from nowhere.
ReplyDeleteBackground? Who cares. The dumbing down of Florida continues, toddler speak: I want my WAWA
ReplyDeleteYes, I thought it was extremely rude as well as Burdick skipping out. When we met with her, she was totally in support of us and gave us pointers. I think she is fed up with everyone on the board, but that doesn't give her reason to just leave the meeting. We counted on her.
ReplyDeleteI also agree this whole thing was carefully planned and choreographed! McKinley brining up the church out of nowhere and then her saying that she hadn't made up her mind but the ONE person at the end convinced her (Cecil brumfield)! He stands to make a pretty penny when he sells his lot getting a change in zoning down the road I'm sure. It is Unbelievable and truly disgusting how this county is run.
I believe some lawsuits will be filed against the county and maybe then WAWA will back off.
I really thank you for all your support. I will try to make the meeting on the 26.
I think it's over, you might as well move on to your next protest. Next time, try picking on one you might have a chance of winning. You have no chance against mega corporations. You just set yourselves up for failure, and then cry foul when you lose. Concentrate your efforts on getting rid of sober houses.
ReplyDeleteThere is no chance of winning against elected officials bought and paid for by developers and lobbyists, whether it be the local, county, state level.
ReplyDeleteAnd there is no chance of we, as individual citizens, winning against Sober Homes. Until restrictions by the ADA and the US government lighten up and allow local municipalities to rid themselves of this scourge, then we are stuck.
All we can do is voice our opinion. And that's never really a waste of time.
But you're right...the county commission did not listen to the people...as usual.
Cheap gas and great subs. Can't wait.
