Comment Up
What we might see in the future while shopping at Publix

The Florida House Judiciary Committee paved the way for open carry Thursday, approving a measure to legalize a bill allowing open carry-- the bill’s last stop before heading to the House floor -- by a vote of 12-4.

Only one Democrat, Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasalinda, D-Tallahassee, voted to approve the measure.

  2. Dumb, just what we need more yahoos with guns. Lots of folks calling police about people with guns, no way to tell who is a good guy or a bad guy, will divert police resources. What happens when one good guy with a gun meets another good guy with a gun (both open carry), but the first good guy with a gun things the second guy is a bad guy (maybe b/c he's black or maybe just cause) and the first good guy with a gun, stands his ground and shoots the other one b/c he is in fear of his life from the other good guy with a gun.

  4. From the article-It's legal for gun owners to carry handguns openly in 30 states without a license or permit, while 15 states require a license to carry openly. If the Florida Legislature approves the measure, Florida would become the 46th state to allow open carry.
So this is nothing new. Florida is not reinventing the wheel. How is this going in other states? Is crime/gun violence up or down in those states?
The sight of a "regular person" carrying would really not shock me. I am already used to seeing police officers with weapons.
You know what really spooks me? The sight of a Muslim woman (maybe) fully covered so that only their eyes show.I'm much more afraid of what I CAN'T see than what is in plain sight.

  5. LOL. Lynn most people were much more polite in the days of Wild Bill Hickok. Most of the Jackasses were DEAD jackasses.

  6. Not a very good choice of firearm for that woman. Much too large for her. Also, the caliber is much too large for everyday use.For God's sake,is she going bear hunting? If she did fire it it would go thru whoever she was shooting and thru several bystanders and walls !

  7. This excellent comment was copied from the article:

You did read the part about how Disney bans guns, concealed or otherwise, on Disney property, right? Look, I don't need to try to convince you to visit Florida... no one will miss your absence any more than California will notice your presence. As long as you are acknowledging the irrationality of the fact that merely "seeing" a gun (even though you know they are there regardless) makes you so uncomfortable that you literally decide to travel to the opposite side of the country, then that's about all that can be said about that. Remember that (assuming this bill becomes law), in the future, you can ONLY visit California, New York, Illinois, and South Carolina... since those are the only states that ban open carry. Of course, there's plenty of violent crime in LA, NYC, and especially Chicago. But, hey... as long as you don't see a gun, right? I wonder where you live. If it's not in one of those states, do you see openly carried guns all the time? I formerly lived in an open carry state, and I can count the number of guns I saw openly carried in the last 15 years I lived there on two fingers. It's a small percentage of people who carry concealed and a much, much smaller number that would carry openly -- legal or not. In all seriousness, as a firearms instructor who grew up in a family that would never own guns, I've seen both sides. I really can't blame the non-gun-owning public for being irrationally frightened by firearms considering all your knowledge on the subject comes from Hollywood nonsense, sensationalized news stories about "mass shootings", and biased anti-gun propaganda. The picture that's painted is frightening, but it's that way by design. The truth is a lot less exciting. In the past 25 years, the violent crime rate has dropped by half and the number of guns in circulation has doubled. It literally has never been safer to be living in this country despite the hundreds of millions of guns floating around out there. Maybe one has something to do with the other or maybe not. Crime rates involving gun owners with carry licenses have consistently been about 0.02% of all carry permit holders since Florida’s right-to-carry law started in 1988. After passing their concealed carry law, Florida’s homicide rate fell from 36% above the national average to 4% below. In all likelihood, if this law passes, tourists (especially those who fly into an airport where guns are prohibited, travel to a resort where guns are prohibited, go to an amusement park where guns are prohibited, shop at a mall where guns are prohibited, and then fly back out) will notice absolutely NO change. In fact, if other open carry states are any indication, even residents who go about there day in the general public will very, very infrequently even see a gun. Texas just passed a similar law and according to law enforcement, they have had no drama and noticed almost no change at all. The only difference with this law literally comes down to an un-tucked t-shirt. Hopefully the law will pass, and we can all look back on this hysteria as the overblown media-fueled hype that it is.

  8. You would miss me--you keep coming over here and giving me shit. I had the link to what was said above which said--read more... anonymous, who is so damn smart as well as insulting. All you had to do is click it on.

Get your damn gun and don't come around me with your crap. I don't give a crap about what other states are doing about open carry. I can't even imagine open carry as there are way too many crazies around who would shoot first and ask questions last. There is no way to know who is mentally ill in spite of background checks.

So as said, if you come over with your outrageous insults one more time, it won't get posted. It's simple. It's about as simple as someone blasting someone away for no reason at all. So, don't blast me for a different opinion. Be nice.

  9. Why do people feel the need to open carry? Are they so fearful that don't feel comfortable going out in public without showing off their gun? If yes, then they likely have serious mental issues and shouldn't be carrying a gun. The other group that seems to like to open carry are the gun nuts, mostly men, who like to go around intimidating others. I think they might have small you know whats and the gun makes them feel big and tough. Again mental health problems.

The only open carry that makes sense to me is open carry on private property for a reason, i.e. you own a jewelry store, you want to carry an open side arm to reduce theft risks. To me that would be ok, b/c you are not out and about going to Publix trying to bully others with your gun. Other than that dumb, dumb, dumb.

  10. This is better than what is seen daily at Publix on Dixie now:sober house addicts with food stamps waiting for mo' money at the western union, people eating deli food before paying for it and rampant theft.

  11. Publix needs armed private security guards all hours they are open, sadly. They're gonna see a spike in the thievery with this EF! group of anarchist wanna be's flocking to LW for the month of February looking to score free food.
