Pastor Sherry Colby

Comment Up

Pastor Colby gave the invocation at our last regular commission meeting. Following is her intro to her invocation:

"Commissioners and Mayor, before I speak, I need to share something with you.

I did not have a clue what was going on here tonight. [changing procedure on invocations] On my way here driving, I asked the Lord and I said, "What is it you want me to pray for, for the city" and He said, "They're going to make a major decision tonight." And the Lord said, "tell them that you will stand before Him one day on this decision...we want the hand of God on this city."

Again, I said I had no clue that this possibly would be the last invocation so a major decision is in your hands before God, right now. So, let's go to the Lord in prayer."

Please see and listen to the video for her outstanding invocation.

  1. This is exactly why we should not have prayer at government meetings.

  2. What is "exactly why we should not have prayer at government meetings?"

You didn't tell us why. We are a country "under God."
Congress is permitted to add the words "under God" to government materials because the phrase does not "establish" any specific religion. Invocations are said there before every meeting.

Americans are permitted to Pledge to a nation under any "God" they choose.

You don't like to hear invocations, step out of the room.

  3. Hand of God in city meetings, give me a break. What does that say to those of us who are not religious that we don't belong in this City?? This makes a clear example of a religious invocation that excludes people and makes many very uncomfortable. There should be no prayer at city meetings, go to church if you want to pray or pray silently stop subjecting the rest of us to this nonsense.

  4. If you want to pray step out of the room, this is ridiculous.

  5. If you don't like invocations, step out of the room. YOU ARE RIDICULOUS.
NO ONE has ever been excluded from giving an invocation...any faith and non-believer for that matter.
This is not about religion...so stay non-religious if you so choose. You are a very small minority of atheists subjecting the overwhelming majority to your lack of belief.
