Quote of the Day - Walter Lippmann

Comment Up
A free press is not a privilege but an organic necessity in a great society. Without criticism and reliable and intelligent reporting, the government cannot govern. For there is no adequate way in which it can keep itself informed about what the people of the country are thinking and doing and wanting.

~ Walter Lippmann, American writer, journalist, political commentator

Lippmann saw the purpose of journalism as "intelligence work." Within this role, journalists are a link between policymakers and the public. A journalist seeks facts from policymakers which he then transmits to citizens who form a public opinion. In this model, the information may be used to hold policymakers accountable to citizens. And that is why some of us keep up with what our elected officials are doing within this city.  Some of us look at it all objectively whereas others might look at it differently depending upon their politics or the politics of the day. We at Lynn's Little Bit of Trivia are part of the former.

  1. How was this post offensive to some people?

In any case, I was just thinking about LW's desire to attract "artists and intellectuals".

Great. Yet, for some reason, certain groups here can't even tolerate a mild protest against PBSO (or the fact that you live in a condo)or any conflicting opinions without resorting to
    bizarre personal attacks.

This is making LW look like it's full of intolerant idiots which is just the opposite of what thy supposedly want.

Personally, I'm afraid to go to any meetings and express my opinion. Call me spineless, I guess.

  2. I can well understand your point. It is up to the mayor to change this lack of civility.

  3. Lynn, how does Blackman get away with copying word for word off your blog and using your photos as well? Can't you complain to blogger or something? He wouldn't have a blog half the time if he couldn't go after you. jackA.
