Seeing Ron Exline the other night at the LW 2020 meeting at the Glass House brought back some memories.
Even this article shows that we have had disgruntled people for decades here in Lake Worth--some like the decisions of a commission; others don't. I would bet, however, that people were a whole lot nicer back then and opinions could be heard without one side getting ticked off or being outspokenly rude towards another resident at a town hall district or commission meeting. It was a more cordial era. We didn't have the personal attacks from Internet users who feel they now can say any nasty thing in the book, anonymously of course.
Lw Bans Skates, Bikes On Sidewalks
July 4, 1989

LAKE
WORTH -- Bicycles, skateboards and roller skates are officially
unwelcome on the sidewalks of the downtown area, city commissioners
decided on Monday, even if the vehicles are propelled by someone too
small to be in traffic.
Commissioners unanimously passed an ordinance, to be effective on July 13, banning bikes, skateboards, roller skates ``or other types of coaster vehicle`` from the downtown area, despite protests from bicyclists and merchants alike.

Bicyclists ride on the sidewalk on Lake Ave all of the time. No one says a thing about them. I am sure, even if this ordinance is old, there is something on the books that prohibits this sort of activity. I ALSO agree with the rude remarks about other citizens and the mayor allows it to happen.
ReplyDeleteThe police and PBSO are here in this city and paid to enforce our laws, but they don't enforce them either, you see so many bikes on sidewalks, skateboards too, they almost run you over. On top of it, bikes do not follow even the proper rules of the road for bikes in this city, they are on the sidewalks, run red lights, do not stop, drive against one way streets, they put themselves and drivers in great risk in this city. A family member who came to visit me from MD told me this city is crazy in how the bikes drive so risky, it is hard city to drive in because most bikers do not follow any rules. And, our police do not enforce the laws in this city. Go to the beach see how many drink alcohol in public or in parks, we have reach a level in our society where we break every rule on the books now, no one cares, and police do not even try to enforce anything anymore. It is no wonder now one has respect for law enforcement anymore, because police/law enforcement DO NOT ENFORCE our laws.
ReplyDeletePBSO will not enforce LW ordinances and that is what this is.
ReplyDeleteWhat does PBSO do? Our own police dept enforced laws. Crime is worse now.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that PBSO only want to enforce county laws right? They do not feel they have to enforce LW city laws although our city pays them to police for us? How can they get away with this? How do they get away with this? I am losing more and more respect for PBSO in this city. Crime is getting out of control again. The thefts, muggings, robberies, burglaries, drug dealing and prostitution, it is a lot worse now it seems, when I see the reports Lynn places on this blog it is mind blowing. What is or does PBSO do for our city? Mary L always talks about Make the call ya'll but it seems more and more like PBSO doesn't want to be bothered by us when we bring the crime to them to address.
