This is the legacy of the present commission. They have done nothing about this problem that is growing like a weed all over our town. All they do is worry about stupid crap and get their pic in the paper.
Yes, all over our town, like the dumps at 1306 and 1320 Lucerne, supposedly owned by some rich famous person, why are they allowed to look so bad, all these boarded up buildings? Now look kiddy-corner from here at 1401 Lucerne, two more buildings all boarded up, does the same owner now own these too? Why is Lucerne and Lake Ave west of Dixie allowed look so dumpy and blighted? If all these properties were in College Park or South Palm Parkway something would be done, the owners should be ashamed of themselves contributing to so much blight in our great little city.
Code is non-existent except to hassle people who already follow the rules. They won't open cases on properties despite the rules and ordinances that require them to do so. Many towns make money of their code enforcement, I'm not saying that is what LW should do, but come on, why won't code issue any citations to these properties in disrepair. They will issue a citation to me b/c I refuse to let them inspect my rental property every 6 mos. and then they will waste my time in having to come to code enforcement hearing and argue the code, which I won. But they won't issue code violations to properties that are unsafe or in disrepair. I already pay for a rental license, I pay for a business license, I pay for an annual inspection but they still hassle me and let these real problems continue.
The last poster is 100% correct! I personally watched as crews were clearing out the brush and collecting the items in the picture to get it ready to be clear out and start the renovations of this property....Its is BLIGHT being resolved not contributing and long over due. In this particular case KUDOS to the new owners for starting the clean up process and frankly people have some patience as they take care of business.
Robert, they left the debris sitting around for 5 days. It should have been hauled off daily. And even if that was just way too much trouble to haul it off daily (they would have to do that where I live) then it should have been covered so as not to be an eyesore.
Very good point Lynn, If we all recall when they were demolishing the building on 2nd Avenue North and Dixie it was well documented that there was no safety precautions taken to keep the public out of the ruble and this project seems to be the same thing.
In other parts of the county and other municipalities the code forces that construction debris must be behind a barrier and/or at least covered up.
When I inquired about this with the city the response was "our codes does not have such provisions"
With that said I will do my part and start speaking with the CM and Commission and see if we can get that changed and hopefully others will ask for the same.

ReplyDeleteThe place was cleaned out last Tuesday and it sat there for 3 or 4 days. It was finally hauled out of there today. Where's code?
