The problem
This is how they take care of illegal aliens in England--They don't fool around.
They don't have a problem like we do. The European Commission study, Clandestino, used analysis of legal records and interviews with migrants and experts. It calculated there were between 1.9 million and 3.8 million irregular migrants in the EU five years ago. However, it is uncontrolled and growing and they say the same thing that our government says--control the borders.
As Congress prepares for the coming immigration debate, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano declared, “I believe the border is secure.”
"There is no statistic, metric or evidence that the border is more secure than ever. I went out there for a couple days and found multiple spots where you can see trails of people coming in. They were still apprehending massive amounts of drugs out there, this is a very porous border," said Rep Jason Chaffets, R-Utah.

According to the United States Border Patrol, there are 16 official Ports of Entry along the US / Mexican border. These entry points are the only official crossing points along this border. Of the 1,945 miles of border only about 50 miles are actually guarded by the United States Border Patrol. These 50 miles surround the various official crossing points and an additional 15 miles of barricade from the Pacific Ocean Eastward.
The border is not secure and needs to be sealed before Congress votes on comprehensive immigration reform further undermining our country.

How do we do that given conservative's approach to smaller government?
It's easy to point fingers and use countries that are totally surrounded by water as examples, but what are your solutions and the solutions of the right wing given the ideology that "less government is better."

ReplyDeleteI think what is meant by "less government is better" is that there are departments that are sucking up multi-millions to run and are ineffective per experts and some politicians. Cut and eliminate some of the bureaucracies, sub-departments, enforce our laws and enforce the Constitution and do what it takes to secure our borders. Protecting America is government's number one job I would think.
Both the Repubs and Dems say it would be impossible t seal the border. A fence won't work. Really? They need to talk to the East Germans.Now that, blokes, was a wall!

ReplyDeleteOkay, so...most folks would love a more efficient government. I know I would. Most everyone would love to see their taxes reduced. I don't know one person who really wants to pay more.
But how do you propose that we "secure our borders?" Build a 20 foot wall from San Ysidro to Brownsville? How much is it going to cost to build that wall and then properly patrol it? And how much do you think that the wall from Washington to Maine is going to cost? And what about all those new Coast Guard ships that will have to be lined up in the Gulf of Mexico and in the Pacific and Atlantic? And all the new Coasties and Border Patrol officers that need to be hired?
"Secure our borders" sounds great and it's a wonderful reason to dismantle the Department of Education and Commerce and defund the National Endowment of the Arts and other "liberal" programs in the name of national security, but I can almost betcha that the same folks who have piled onto that bandwagon are going to be screaming even more when they see how big government needs to get to secure our borders.
As a sidenote, I have to chuckle when someone uses the Iron Curtain as a model for this country. I mean, really, Anon?
If you want to get into the head of someone "in the extreme right," I don't know why you are bothering me. Personally, I can't stand EXTREMES on either side of the coin.
