Talk like a Pirate getting more attention

Comment Up
United Press International, located in Washington, D.C., has picked up on our "Talk like a Pirate" proclamation and the Palm Beach Post article It is now being circulated to many markets. Read more...

Following is former Commissioner Jo-Ann Golden's letter to the city manager, Michael Bornstein:

Subject: Proclamation on city agenda

Dear Michael,

The proclamation set to be read this evening is an insult to the people of the City of Lake Worth. In these times when there is so much turmoil, ignorance, and killing, this effort to further dumb down our government should be rejected.

Pirates operate outside the sovereign governments. Pirates are outside of the law. What exactly is the purpose of this day? Pirates shared in whatever they seized. Are we promoting this philosophy for our City Government.

Modern definitions of piracy include the following acts: Kidnapping of people for ransom, robbery, murder, seizure and sabotage. People are killed by pirates. Environmentalist and yachtsman Peter Blake was murdered by pirates in 2001. A pirate is a criminal who plunders at sea; commonly attacking merchants ships and often pillaging port towns.

"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be." Thomas Jefferson.

"This institution will be based on the illimitable freedom of the human mind. For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it." Thomas Jefferson

Please return to reason. Perhaps it would have been more appropriate this week to recognize Constitution Day commemorating the signing of our Nation's Constitution. This agenda has been degraded by the inclusion of this proclamation. City Hall is showing a lack of sensitivity and an extremely juvenile mentality. There is no person,or for that matter, any city, that denigrates itself and expects to succeed. To grunt and growl like a pirate is a poor way to show respect for each other and our community. Please pull this agenda item.

Sincerely,
Jo-Ann Golden

  1. If this Commission were not so pirate like in real life, then I might be more inclined to have some fun with them.

  2. That is exactly how I feel about it. When you see the heavy handedness from the Mayor, the rolling of the eyes of Maxwell and Amoroso when McVoy and Mulvehill speak, the condescension from the trio, the city manager's facial antics and their actions over the last 10 months, this is no time to act more like fools.
POINT OF ORDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not a joke. Everyone should be treated with respect by everyone on that dais. What this commission has done regarding the referendum, as one prime example, shows their total disrespect of the people. Now it seems they are using Glen Torcivia, city attny and William Waters, as their excuse to be able to stick it to the people.

It is government at its worst.

  3. It would seem that the more the CM, CA & elected Officials understand the root causes of our most significant problems, the politicing and judgements of Mcvoy and Mulvehill do not seem to ever be part of the solution.
You don't garner respect when you are part of the problem.

  4. I's easy to hurl stones, anonymous. I can think of plenty of things they voted on correctly and at least 21 things that this present commission did not. The root problem is CORRUPTION and it is back.

  5. Oh my gosh guys...lighten up!
Jo-Ann, you must be a killjoy on Halloween - perhaps wanting everyone to dress as angels and socialists?
LW is in no way alone in the pirate silliness...it's just that.
A little levity during rough times.
For Joann to take it to the extreme and declare that pirates are nothing to emulate, is just as silly.
Lord knows what she must have thought of Pirates of the Caribbean! :)
Relax everyone, a little levity goes a long way.

  7. Here we are again. Earlier this summer we had one former city commissioner being photographed parading around with some friends in early Halloween costunes resembling female sex organs.

Now another former commissioner is being satirised by PB Post Columnists Frank Cerabino. We wonder why we're always being made fun of?

  8. Greg, did you ever consider making a resolution for Talking Like a Pirate is what's nuts? Is that anything you could contemplate? We are being made fun of because of making a resolution on this. Cerabino is a jokster and usually not very funny. Golden's point was why do something like this and totally ignore something important like Constitution Day. Her points were valid and now you all want to make this a political joke. The joke is on us for doing something so asinine.

  9. Commissioner Golden, a commissioner for more than 4 years, correct. Did she ever suggest during all that time we recognize Constitution Day with a proclamation? I don't know. My point is, the speak like a Piriate Day is a fun middle of the week thing for not just us fun loving Jimmy Buffett affectionaridos to laugh about here in LW, but like minded fun loving people around the world to enjoy for one day too. Let's all back off and enjoy it like Frank did.

I don't care that this guy is "married". His tastes seem quite gay.
