Peter: I don't have any receipts!
Jeff: Don't worry about any damn receipts!
And shut up Cara.
And shut up Cara.
Jeff: Will the Silly Putty hold?
Peter: Don't worry. This white elephant is a knockdown.
Well no wonder the pool hasn't made any money. It's been closed for two plus years. Prior to that, the boys and girls in charge wanted to have a public/private partnership with Greater Bay. In other words, they wanted to just hand over our 19 acres to a "flipper" perhaps developer (no one knew what Greater Bay really was) to rid themselves of the so called "problem."
For several years, we were going through the scare of demolition of the casino property on a daily basis, thanks to Clemens, and a few of his boys. Periodically, they came up and drilled holes in the structure to prove the place was a disaster. That started with Mayor Romano. Then the economy took a tank...property values started to slide and we closed the pool for one-half year during high season, staff's solution of a wise expenditure cut. Never could figure that one out. The tourists are here in the Winter months wanting to swim in a fresh water pool sans the sand. Then we had the construction of our new Casino that closed the pool and as we are finding out, damaged it as well.
Any time a city is looking to implement austerity measures, they look to close down a city pool. That is numero uno. Well, everything else is getting to be Spanish these days. As said previously, this is no surprise. It was in the cards considering all the shenanigans going on back then and the close to $1 million that was spent on our pool readying it for profit and fixing the screw-ups.
The City has made it nearly impossible for our public Olympic pool to be self-sustaining. Back then, even the flyers the pool lifeguards printed to advertise upcoming events were done on their own dime. It was pathetic. Who says that it should be self-sustaining anyway? Who says that everything we provide for our residents needs to make money? Do our other parks and facilities make money? Isn't that a main obejective of government-- to provide services to its residents? We moved the golfcourse out of an enterprise fund so that it could be relieved from the stress of making a profit as its only objective and allow our magnificent course to grow its membership, prosper and survive. Why is our beach and pool being treated differently?
The only legitimate end of government is to protect the citizen in the enjoyment of life, liberty, and property. This pool is our property, not theirs. We paid for it. How can a city government call it a White Elephant and want to permanently close it? City Manager? Is wishing it so make it so?
As we approach our Centennial, remember our pool has been here since 1922. It is a big part of our history and pride. Protect our assets and market them accordingly. And like anything else, with the right management, our pool will be a "green" elephant and will be very successful.
In the words of our local news editor: "Shame."
It seems like Lake Worth is made out of cork... I'm new to the area, bUt since reading in "Mother Jones" maGazine a few years back about the election of Cara Jenning, seems like LW has been in a continous downward uncontrolled spin. This morning I read in the Post about C.R.O.S. moving the food pantry to Lake Worth, to 1712 Second Avenue North. Here we go again, making every possible attempt to birng to the City people that are incapable of sustaining themselves along with drug addicts, indigents, beggars, cheap whores, etc. In other words the scum of society. When are we collectively going to start standing together and working towards bringing citizens who will contribute towards uplifting the city. Until that happens, we will continue to be the laughing stock of the neighboring communities... yes we will continue to earn the title of "Lake WORTHLESS"
ReplyDeleteI believe now it is not only the question of leaving the pool open or not, but what damage has been done to the pool during construction. I have heard the entire pool is tilting several inches to the west, that is the tip of the iceberg, the real damage is to all the plumbing under the pool when a pool shifts that much. And insurance to cover the costs of construction damage??? we are self insured? Was that really a negotiation to save money on the casino contract? Wonder who thought that was a good idea?
ReplyDeleteThe only thing worthless is your information and those people you are talking to. Change your friends who keep blaming Jennings on all things past and future.
ReplyDeleteWell, whose fault was the damage? The question we should be asking is--did we do something really stupid in the contract like indemnifying the contractor? What sort of collusion do we have to look forward to for the city to take the easy way out and just pave over the damn thing since they are paranoid about legal fees.
ReplyDeleteWho owns that swimming pool, that the opinion of one ignorant character can decide that the public property, important City asset, which brings people (young and old) together, should just be paved over.Does that creature know how many Lake Worth Children learn to swim, are kept of the streets , and how many handicapped and elderly do aerobics, aquatics etc..Just because one single incompetent and ditto Commission, cannot come up with the simple solution ,to correct this,if it is even true,
ReplyDeleteis no reason to get hysterical, because the insurance premium we pay ,is unknown to that clown,is reaon to destroy an magnificent Beachfront,Palm Beach Island asset,he did not pay for. let him move to Lantana or Riviera Beach!
Who has verified the truth of this rumor?Previous Commissions made us pay hundreds of thousands for phony structural engineers, to get a result they wanted,to distroy City proerties, the bums do not own.
ARE COMMISSION MEMBERS ELECTED TO DESTROY CITY PROPERTIES TO CONVENIENCE, TO AVOID RESPONSIBILITY OF MAINTENANCE WHICH THIS CITY IS KNOWN FOR, TO
JUST SIT THERE ACTING ARROGANTLY, ANNOUNCING THAT THEY WANT TO DISTROY CITY AND TAXPAYERS OWNED PROPERTIES USED BY CITIZENS AND NEEDED FOR THE COMMUNITY.THEY WANT TO DESTROY THE VENUES WHICH BRING THE PEOPLE TOGETHER .tHROW THOSE IRRESPONSIBLE BUMS OUT,AS cOAKLEY SUGGETS RIGHTFULLY!
Do we know if there is insurance to cover the damage to the pool? Every construction contract I have ever seen requires insurance. Can we get an answer to that question before we make this such a big issue.
ReplyDeleteThis accusation of the Casino contracttors, smells to the high heavens. This was lodged by a Commission member who has for 9 years been against this revenue generating Lake Worth 1921 casino recreation. The sneak does not know:we have Insurance for a real situation of construction damage. There have been so mnay liars on the Commission. He is against any project bringing revenue..as are his simpleton colleagues who don't know how ,and what to create. We have paid $100's of thousands for many corrupt so-called structural engineers who alledgedly tested the strength of the Casino walls with a 1 inch deep drilling and stated the building was about to fall down, and is a hazard,a false report they were forced to deliver by the Commission.I have names!!!!!John G's and other stores stayed open till the new bona fide succesful Architects and Constr.Co's REG and Morganti went to work,a year and 1/2 later.
ReplyDeleteNot creators of still-borns like the one on 1003 Lake Avenue.
Those who never used the pool have never seen how it keeps kids from the streets, drugs, burglaries, carjacking, when swimming in our pool, water aerobics for seniors, teaching children to swim, when many drown unnecessarily in family pools.Commission members were not elected to destroy Lake Worth City properties paid for with taxpayers money, only because they are too incompetent, ignorant to manage an Olympic size pool on the Beach.
Wellington built one last year and made it a spectacular popular succesfull source of revenue, with knowledge and innovation.Arrogant
losers want to destroy what they do not own and cannot manage. Get lost losers.Ever heard of publicity? It creates revenue stream from tourism.Lake Worth never had it with it's hot air Chamber of commerce! It watched many businesses go under while they were ...collecting money.
No construction Contract was ever issued without insurance, and the 2 Construction Co's. are being accused of having caused damage to Lake Worth Olympic size swimming pool.Paul Colby are you aware? The morons don't know that all bona fide Contr.Firms have insurance.
ReplyDeleteRomano was known to have men with sledge hammers cause holes in the Casino loggia ceiling at night wittnessed by merchants to prove the next day,it was falling down.5 Years. He had a Constr.firm in the wings to do the Casino reconstruction for $19,000,000,- with no cap and construction time limit.!!!!I have newspaper clipping of this outrageous fact.We have seen it before.Who served up this new accusation because of insidious ,corrupt plans? The Contractor of still born concrete boxes?
later John G's was still open and all other stores.Citizens of Lake Worth,do not let dirty Commissioners and malcontents destroy your valuable asset, unique on the Beach in Florida.
