Boynton manager 'search' a costly farce

It's always challenging to find a good city manager. It's even more challenging when a city conducts a nationwide search with an ad that reads: "City Manager Position. Applicants need not apply."

That's essentially what Boynton Beach did, since three of the five commissioners made it clear they had no interest in hiring from outside. Why waste our tax dollars with a farce of a search when the interim manager was the only one who would ever be considered by the majority of the board, but it requires four votes to pick a manager?

The only thing accomplished by the search was to advertise to the nation that Boynton Beach is kind of nutty. It's surprising that any applicant (one) showed up for an interview. It's possible that our interim manager is the best qualified. It's unfortunate that we will never know for certain, because comments by commissioners eliminated the competition.

..............
I featured the above letter to show the complete waste of time and resources that not only happens in Boynton Beach but in most cities that are run by politicians who have already made up their minds before the fact.

I don't know what happened during our city manager interviews in Lake Worth. We do know that a lot of qualified people dropped out. In the end, we only had two people to interview and the commission chose Mr. Personality and someone for whom they had instant rapport.

Now Boynton is seriously considering going with the PBSO. Bradshaw's office is giving the same old pitch to snare them in to the fold. He says that they will save them $5 million a year. Bradshaw will be charging them $21 million a year with a 7% max increase yearly. This will be by reducing the number of officers from 164 to 128, changing the number on the shifts and similar changes as they did in Lake Worth, turning over all their police assets to the PBSO. Boynton will be losing total control of all future costs.

In desperate times, politicians and city governments do desperate things never realizing or worrying about future consequences.

  1. What they should do is let PBSO take over policing the entire county and then just let us pay on our taxes, they can really making it more cost effective if they did this, we pay too much in this city for duplicate fees, there is too much waste. How much does Bradshaw make? I won't vote for him in the future. We need more effective government. There is too much waste.

  2. Do you have a screw loose, anony? :) What this is all about is making as much money as they can off the cities in which they control. Having no competition is a one-sided affair.

They take all of your patrol cars, all of your guns, equipment, radios, etc. until no city can ever afford to have its own police department again. Once they have you, there is no turning back. Costs can escalate out of control especially when the unions are involved.

Yes, PBSO is doing a lot of feel good things in the community. Crime is still rampant.

  3. Politicians do not worry about future consequences unless it has to do with re-election because they are self –serving and short sighted!

  4. Amen, I agree 100%, Clemens was No. 1 in self-serving. We need an overhaul on elections, term limits, etc, they should be service years, no pay or benefits, 2 years max and move on. I hate politicians!
