The Bully

Comment Up
Mark Farrington
City of Lake Worth
Human Resource Director

At the February 7th meeting, Mark Farrington held his ground with Vice Mayor Maxwell. I was really impressed and thought that "wow, here is a guy who won't put up with any BS." But between that meeting and Thursday night, things seemed to turn around. He became totally a "company man."

Mark Farrington suggested an entirely different process than what was decided at the February 7 meeting...instead of 3 top candidates he suggested 5. Perhaps Farrington came up with this all on his own. Perhaps he was told in no uncertain terms, get Kroll on that short list. We will never know if the commissioners have given any direction to staff, which is against the Charter, as employees want to keep their jobs.
Many of staff will accept untenable conditions and go to extraordinary lengths to keep their jobs even kissing the boss' ring. Being fired is costly as you have witnessed in the city manager fiasco. She was fired because of a personality mis-match and a commission that had no faith in their ability to control that employee--no faith in their own leadership. An employee who stands up to his beliefs, is honorable but occasionally it is difficult to do when you are working under a bully.

John Dootlittle said, "Bullying wasn't okay in elementary school and it isn't okay now, especially when it comes in the form of a U.S. Supreme Court decision." And this thought trickles right down to our own dais at City Hall. Actually what is occurring from the Visionaries on the dais is exactly what they accused Susan Stanton of doing--bullying.

Did you ever know or encounter a bully when you were a kid? Sometimes that behavior can be identified as early as kindergarten. Some bullies don't grow out of it and continue on into adulthood. Some just haven't learned to control their anger and fighting instincts. Some become elected officials or your boss. Some just accuse the other guy of exactly what they are doing themselves...all because they want their way and they make no bones about it. They have an uncanny way of "seeing" it in someone else but they never, never look in the mirror.
  • greater than average aggressive behavior patterns
  • the desire to dominate peers
  • the need to feel in control, to win
  • no sense of remorse for hurting another
  • a refusal to accept responsibility for his/her behavior
The definitions of a bully are: 1) To treat in an overbearing or intimidating manner. 2) To make (one's way) aggressively. 3) To force one's way aggressively or by intimidation. 4) To provide persistent, unwelcome behavior. Source: Lifafteradultbullying.com

We have that on our dais. No one should have to put up with it. Our former city manager put up with it from Scott Maxwell over and over again. The Human Resource Director does not stand alone when it comes to being a victim of bullying. There is the Utility Director and the Assistant City Manager who has had to stand up for herself with the Vice Mayor for a year now on the beach redevelopment and casino leases. I can just imagine what an unpleasant experience it is to be constantly subjected to harsh, severe, sarcastic and sometimes even hostile questions and/or rhetoric from the King Inquisitor who now has powers he never dreamed thanks to two who just go along.

  2. I allowed this comment to go through just to show, once again, how stupid politics prevents some from seeing the true picture. It is easier just being a BULLY as this anonymous poster attempted to do.

Actually I should be so lucky to have Rush's gift for gab and the results of his views which made him a multi-millionaire.

  3. I think you made a slight mistake here. It is the commission that is worthless right now.

  4. What is the true picture? Is it the one you paint with your accusations? Now everyone is supposed to believe that Mr. Farrington who recommended the change to 5 candidates and Mr. Carr who concurred with this approach were forced to take this approach by a commissioner. OM!

Your favorite CM, Ms. Stanton, is the one who instructed staff not to provide commissioners with information. Ms. Mattey has instructed the utilities staff to call supervisors if asked for information by a commissioner. While you might say everyone is entitled to their opinion, you don't show that on your blog as comments contrary to your opinion never see the light of the Comments Section.

  5. When Farrington said that he recommended 5 candidates be ranked equally, this was contrary from the Feb 7 directive of the top 3. Steve Carr piped in that "we are proposing 3 to 5" softening it up just a bit. The fact remains that it all got changed STU.
And Stu, I have no idea of what you say regarding Stanton is true or not or even Mattey for that matter. It has NEVER come out in a public meeting that top management is covering up everything or not telling the truth. Your favorite, Maxwell, NEVER met with the CM not once.

  6. P.S. Stu--If I don't post something here it is because you got personal or it was an untrue statement, etc.

  7. Now you determine what is true or not... As information, I don't have any favorites among the commissioners. They should all be serving doing their best to serve the people of Lake Worth. Now if you want to talk about writers, musicians, etc, I do have favorites.

  8. Your response about not posting if personal or untrue is not true at all. I send many posts that are neither but because they are contrary and factual they don't get posted.
Have you tried asking Mr. Farrington and Mr. Frey why there was a change in the hiring procedure? This is unheard of. Lord knows Lake Worth is the only city where something like this could ever happen.

  9. Many points have been made that are legitimate but where the problem lies with me is when you get personal just like you did in the above post by calling me a liar. Start posting under your real identity and let's see how brave you are. Stick to the discussion.
Now if you know something about hiring procedure, why not reveal that? What is the mystery? In fact, I would doubt if anyone knows what in heck you are saying here.
    Thanks.

  10. So it is okay for you to call someone a bully, but a commenter cannot question the veracity of the blogger's post? That does not seem appropriate to me. You present your posts as "fact" and don't want any comments that question those "facts."

  11. Poster above--I write a blog that is opinion and commentary. Check with the sub-title.
Also, check with the blog rules.
Once you do all of that, then we should have a mutal understanding here--you disagree with me. Good for you, as Kathleen Margoles would say.
