North Palm Beach fires city manager

Comment Up
North Palm Beach must have read about Lake Worth dismissing its city manager because of her "personality."

It seems that more and more Union members have clout. They get their feelings hurt easily. They complain. They don't have to do anything not in their job description. They can even take personal cell phone calls while customers are waiting. And all they want the citizenry to do is pay for their lucrative pension and other benefits.

North Palm Beach just fired its city manager after 7 months on the job citing a "bad fit" because of low employee morale...bad personality they said. No one likes the boss anymore.

Read about it.

  1. I just love all these people who keep saying that the people spoke in the last election and wanted the cm out, etc. I never heard that, not even once. I thought she was doing a good job.

  2. It's a tough business to be in. Here in Lake Worth, it is double-fold. We have serious issues and financial problems as do all cities. The one other thing that sets us apart is that a city manager must deal with the outspoken citizenry. Some are more polite than others regarding the direction they feel the city should take. Some actually stormed her office and demanded actions. A couple I know had a meeting regarding the photos being reinstalled in the chamber and during the course of the meeting said she should be fired. People are not respectful anymore. They believe that their way is right and anything else is unacceptable. There is no compromise. There is little understanding of any different point of view. Well, having a different opinion should not be "part of the problem." It is all in the way you do it. If what you say is supported by facts, then free speech is supreme in my book regardless of whether or not you believe that a CM is doing a great, a good or a poor job or has a lousy personality. I could disagree with Susan but that did not mean that I thought she should be fired. Extreme action was unwarranted here. I only know Susan to be a quiet, devoted, shy, led with convicted, spiritual and a sweet person. So, I think of her differently than some of you.

  3. I saw Scott Maxwell driving on US 1 in North Palm Beach last week!!!!!

  4. Scott does carry a big stick. On top of that, he cost the city a hell of a lot of money by having a personal problem with Susan that he now admits he couldn't handle even with a majority vote.

  5. I think he handled it just fine.

  6. Handled what? what he did was easy.

  7. Lynn, when did he finally admit that he couldn't handle her while being in the majority? What did he tell you? What a loser.

  8. Look. I realize that you love Scott Maxwell and believe he did the right thing here. Your choice. Knock off the personal remarks. I posted this one because it just shows what the mentality is of a few people in this community who can not debate any issue without personal name calling.

He proved he could not control the city manager because, NOW GET THIS----------- he fired her when he had the majority vote to get it all his way. He took the easy way out. To me it shows he has no confidence in his ability to lead.

  9. I am glad Stanton has been let go, she was not a good fit for us here in Lake Worth in my opinion, we deserved better treatment as people from a city manager, maybe NPB felt that way too. Personality and attitude do matter, Stanton's were not my cup of tea. Some liked her some didn't, I think we can do better, that is it, I am sure some in NPB feel the same about theirs.

  10. So, no Executive Session publicized and no public discussion of any substance before the vote in a Special Session of the Commission---sounds like Mr. Titcomb uncovered a skeleton and the owners of the shovels got scared!

  11. This started off as a post about North Palm Beach and now has dissolved into ...

  12. OK... I did not make the "loser" comment above, but did make the comment that he handled it just fine. You are aware that he has had an on-going problem with Susan not giving the information he requested, changing locations of balances in funds and yes, they didn't like each other. A blind person could see that. So it was not just one way. Problem is, Susan couldn't fire Maxwell. Only we, the people could. However, if he could get the support from two other commissioners, he could (and did) fire her.

You were there. It wasn't easy for him to do. He specifically didn't want to go into reasons and get an argument going. He waited until Mulvehill returned from her vacation to make sure no one could say he did it without the full commission there.

Unlike North Palm Beach, whose dirty laundry isn't hung so publicly, our commission was divided.

But like our case, they didn't need a reason for you, me or anyone else. It was just not a good fit.

Should their residents demand "why" from the NPB council?

I know "why". You know "why" and it was evident Susan knew "why". Maybe you noticed a change in her demeanor in the last meeting before her termination. That was a little hint.

    She just needed to go.

  13. Why doesn't it show he had no confidence in HER ability to lead?

  14. Maxwell is a coward supported by cowards.

  15. Doesn't Maxwell deserve the same respect and admiration as Jennings gets for "laying it out" the way it is? She made no secret that she was an anarchist and performed as one..Maxwell made it clear he has little patience for folks who don't speak directly and honestly or who berate and belittle others behind closed doors (city staff)...so his actions should come as no surprise to anyone, and in fact, most people expected it to happen anyway...just didn't know when...

  16. Yes--they deserve the same respect--NONE. Both were/are wrong.
