For all of you east of Dixie and who continue to say that crime is "down" in order to justify the costly decision to go with the Palm Beach County Sheriff, the cold hard facts state otherwise.
In seven days through February 4, we had 251 crimes. There were two vehicle recoveries but then two more car thefts.
What is causing all of this in our city? Drugs and gangs and more and more poor people who are unemployed. There was even a guy with balls who stole a condom the other day. We encourage these people to come here by not addressing the slum and blight. This is what you have and this is what you will get.
Lynn, you can tell the "guy with balls" that he can get condoms - hands full of them - inside almost any of the local bars that line Dixie Hwy. If you've noticed, there is a cause and effect relationship between having balls and the need to use a condom.
ReplyDeleteLynn, while appreciative of your coverage on protection, please allow me to restrict my comments to the PBSO.
ReplyDeleteNotwithstanding repeated Commissions putting crime and protection as their first priority, they never funded our Police Department with sufficient personnel and equipment to adequately address the police function. It was my impression that only a full service contract with the PBSO, with requirements for performance and productivity, was the only way Lake Worth would be adequately protected. Having recently visited a number of neighborhood association meetings, it seems that although the PBSO crime statistics are significant, most citizen comments about the quality and quantity of service have been overwhelmingly favorable.
The aforementioned is not to suggest that PBSO is 100% of the answer. We all understand the importance of education and activities for our youth and the citizen participation in COP, Crime Watches and Crime Walks.

It's not that I don't like the Sheriff--I do. I also liked our own police department. I have always said, with GOOD management, our own department could have been as effective. I concur that the PBSO has more resources and it is 100% better at public relations, but it is breaking the bank. Many of the resources they provide we were and still are paying for in PB County taxes. Crime has not gone down. We simply can not afford them. As a results oriented sort of person, solving the slum and blight is the 1st step, relentless policing even on the minor crimes, clearing up the loitering on Lake and Lucerne, etc then on to education and all the rest. Crack down hard on all crime. More cops on the street, NA crime watches, C.O.P. program and just overall public awareness.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE our Sheriff's dept.but, I think that the contract that we are stuck with is TERRIBLE !!! I blame DAVID VESPO, JEFF CLEMENS and the puppet, RETHA LOWE for voting to get us into this MESS !!! No town should have to go bankrupt to protect their citizens.
