Florida's Strategy to cut Property Taxes

Florida unveils strategy to slash property taxes statewide. Could it work?

Potentially wasteful spending could prove need for tax cuts, CFO said

What we have seen over the last five years, post-COVID, is that local governments have taken their budgets and expanded them greatly,” Ingoglia stated.

According to the CFO, the general fund budgets for these local governments, which are funded by property taxes, have gone up on average between 60% - 120%.

Furthermore, he argued that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these governments used federal funds to greatly expand their scope and — in some cases — grant “egregious raises” to employees.

And then, thanks to the flood of new residents coming into the state, these governments were able to accrue even more tax revenue, which allowed them to keep up their spending, Blaise claimed.

“When you go back pre-COVID, and you start factoring in inflation and population growth, those budgets should not have exploded anywhere near where they’re exploding right now,” he added.

  1. The problem is that they're over building too much in Florida and there's a real estate crisis now a lot of people who bought in the past few years they can't even sell their house for what they paid for it four or five years ago it's worth a lot less there's going to be a lot of upside down mortgages we know some people that paid like 450,000 for a house and now it's only worth $300,000 so it's really problematic and then they keep raising the taxes and putting all these garbage assessments and doing so many other things and they just max out the even if you're Homestead of they Max it out every single year the 3% and then any other assessments that they can add on and people are being taxed out of Florida and we're considering selling our house and moving out of Florida because we feel that the taxes are just unsustainable it's just too high it's too much in the quality of life here really isn't that great anyway people drive so aggressively there's just such an era of selfishness and greed and Corruption here that's just not really welcoming to be around anyway when you go to the beach people have their dogs there or they're smoking or they're drinking nobody follows the laws or does anything here in the State anymore it's so out of control so Lawless it's like why do you want us to keep staying to live in this state when you have to pay so much in taxes and it's such a poor quality of life in the state it's horrible we got our trim the past few weeks from our County Appraiser and they just keep raising everything it's just crazy and it's so unfair with portability some people that get lower taxes and others because of their portability and then others they have like only pay a third of what we pay because they've been in their houses for 20 years and their house could sell is easily as for as much as my house sells for but then they only pay a third of the taxes that I do there's just a lot of unfairness to the way the property tax structure is done and then I really feel like the property appraiser too is inflating the taxes wirh the market value is so much that we could never sell our house for that amount. Florida is going to have a major problem soon and there is going to be a big mess here everyone's going to be fleeing the state with this crazy greedy Tax scheme that they've got going on!

  4. @6:44--Totally disagree with you anonymous. The state operates basically on sales tax and they get 6% and the county gets the rest. We have NO state income tax and that is why 1,000 people a day are moving here. This is a great state with a great governor, My proposed property tax bill arrived today and it is lower than last year.

  5. The sad thing is that they're jacking up the taxes and all these new houses that sold for three and $400,000 they're paying $3-5000 in taxes a year and they have so many new taxes on the tax rolls they're making millions and billions and trillions and where is all this money going is it going into reserves where is it going who knows where this money goes? Because they're getting so much of it there is so much greed and Corruption and pigishness in our government right now they're just so greedy and corrupt that enough is enough they need to lower the taxes because people are going to be moving out very very soon it's already happening people are fleeing the State of Florida right now! Greedy, they should Lower them some with so many new houses

  6. Who are all these people fleeing, anonymous? Sorry, but you are misinformed. Florida has seen rapid population growth over the past few years, adding over 1 million net new residents since the release of the Florida 2030 Blueprint. The Florida Chamber Foundation has forecasted another 225,000-275,000 new Floridians in its recently released economic forecast. Florida continues to have a reputation as the best place to live and work, which attracts new residents. Florida has seen gains in population over the last 5 years from states like New York, New Jersey, and Illinois, that greatly outpace any migration out of Florida.
