Graffiti at 500 N. Dixie Highway Lake Worth

Comment Up

500 N. Dixie is the old Palm Beach Showcase property owned by PBC Land Development LLC. It is situated on 1.1928 acres and the building comprises 23,703 s.f. They paid $2,230,000 in April 2006 and will be paying $29,668 in advalorem according to their latest tax bill.

The owners have allowed it to go to blight and now vandals have defaced the front of the building in spray paint from the decorative tiles near roof to the bottom of the building. The words are difficult to discern but the letters to the right of the front door seem to spell Jihad. As this is on a busy highway, you have to wonder how they got away with it and were unseen.

Now who's the idiot? Shelley Vana

Comment Up

For calling all of us who silently demonstrated at John Prince Park against corporate welfare and her approval while county commissioner of the Atlanta Braves bulldozing our wonderful park, Ms. Vana called us "idiots."

Because of term limits, she could not run again for County Commissioner District 3 and instead threw her hat in the ring to run for Property Appraiser of Palm Beach County. She had zero experience and believed in her own chutzpah. She did have attitude.

Thank God for term limits, something we should have in Lake Worth.

What will she do now? Become a lobbyist for the Atlanta Braves?

Consider voting NO in November to the sales tax increase, a tax we believe a portion will go towards building a $110 million dollar stadium for a billionaire corporation. The newly elected commissioner for Vana's old seat, Dave Kerner, is for the sales tax increase.

Labor Day Weekend Curfew in West Palm Beach

Comment Up

Expect the rowdy kids to head to Lake Worth over Labor day weekend. Of course, few have ever worked and many are clueless as to what we are honoring: contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, the well-being of the country and the labor movement.

We even have a 28 year old NFL quarterback who is ungrateful for what life has given him: Kaepernick signed a 6 year, $114,000,000 contract with the San Francisco 49ers, including a $12,328,766 signing bonus, $61,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $19,000,000.  NFL players are under a collective bargaining agreement.

When someone of this stature dishonors our country, kids are impressionable and think things like this are "cool."

Will we see any deputies on the streets of downtown Lake Worth beginning Friday night at 10pm?

The Environment and our School Teachers

Comment Up

The environment is a scarce resource. Some politicians actually understand that but there are others, like our Palm Beach County Commission, who approve of all development no matter the cost. They are afraid of putting any responsibility on the developer with additional taxes that could put a burden on his entrepreneurship as he may go somewhere else with his concrete project. Even in Lake Worth we give economic development incentives along with reduced electric rates to attract growth, growth that we are paying for in the Park of Commerce, costs to the taxpayer that will never be recaptured in advalorem. Have you driven out there recently and seen all that construction? Ungodly with huge concrete warehouses.

The County continues to allow new communities to be built and even allowed environmental sprawl when a brand new city, Westlake, (Minto West) was formed allowing 4,500 homes plus commercial to be built on agricultural land. The entire development will be slightly larger than the City of Lake Worth. Although Westlake will generate $58.7 million in impact fee revenue for the county with and estimated $42 million of that for roads and $7.5 million will be for schools, the future tax burden for the maintenance will be on all the residents of the county.

Now the School Board already has the one cent penny sales tax spent with its desire for a new high school and three additional elementary schools thanks to all this growth that the County commissioners voted for over the past eight years.

Schools in existence need repairs and are a constant struggle to maintain as funds are stretched. On top of all of this, teachers want a raise and perhaps they would get one if the state stopped many of these tax credits, tax exemptions, tax refunds or outright grants to all these developers paving over our state. These are tax dollars that would otherwise go to pay our teachers or to build our roads.

Which reminds me, vote for Drew Martin for County Commissioner District 3.  He's the only candidate that cares about the over development in our county.

“When the National Anthem is played, I salute because I am a black man born and raised in the inner city afforded the opportunity for greatness in my own right. May you seek God’s forgiveness and find humility, because we, the people are not going to forget what you did and said.”

Reacting to the NFL star Kaepernick who refused and says he will continue to refuse to stand for our National Anthem and our Flag. His father refers to him as a "kid" who was Baptized Methodist and is religious and says we shouldn't be so hard on him.  He's 25 years old and has been given every advantage to be a success in America developing his God given talents. It is rumored that he is being radicalized by his girlfriend.

Red Cross takes hard line against Prayer for flood victims

Comment Up

It's really sad what's going on in our country today. "Apparently, that whole First Amendment, Freedom of Religion thing is kind of passé for some people at the Red Cross down in Lafayette, Louisiana. I mean, how else could you explain their decision to condemn a police officer for having the audacity to pray with flood victims in need of help?

This past week police officer Clay Higgins stopped by the local Red Cross shelter after work to see how he could be of service to the hurting people of his community. Higgins was still in uniform and carrying a Bible as he spoke and prayed with local residents. After a few minutes on scene he was approached by a Red Cross volunteer who told him that the Red Cross had taken issue with what he was doing and wanted him to leave."

Shooter home invaders caught in Lake Worth

There was a home invasion in West Palm Beach on Friday night that involved four young men, two of whom were teenagers. Luckily the homeowner had a firearm and was able to defend himself during the gunshot exchange. One of the criminals was shot by the homeowner and the punks fled.

They were finally captured in Lake Osborne Estates just a short distance down Lake Osborne Drive from where I live.

It is imperative that everyone consider their personal safety as a top priority and have protection in the home. We have been over-run by criminals. The world today has gone stark raving mad and the losers, those who have broken from God, have no regard for your life or property. They have lost themselves and want to take your chips. The liberals sit around wringing their hands wondering what they should do to combat the worst crime in America's history and then ignore it. They condone Sanctuary cities and give punks slaps on the wrists.

As Hillary wants to make gun ownership more difficult, this is the time to take a course and get a gun license.

Exposing Hillary can be a Death Sentence

It's amazing that someone didn't try to take out Bernie when he was exposing Hillary for what she is. But she probably knew all along that he would fall into line.

It all started when Vincent Foster, rumored to be Hillary's ex-lover, was found dead on a D.C. park bench and it was said that he committed suicide. We all know that Julian Assange is about to expose Hillary and just a few weeks ago, his attorney was found dead, hit by a train. Assange says he thinks he knows why his lawyer met a mysterious and untimely demise.

Dr. Drew mentioned Hillary's health last week after he and a friend examined her available health records and became gravely concerned.  Now his show has been cancelled.

Last night's ridiculous meeting on the Lake Worth General Obligation Bond

Comment Up

Last night's meeting nearly ended before it began. It was a "work" Session to discuss the neighborhood streets project, or so we all thought. Other than Commissioner McVoy attempting to have any discussion whatsoever, there was none and none was allowed.

McVoy said that the approach we have as a commissioner should be incumbent on us [the commission] to give the public as much information as possible, that the last bond that lost at the polls and its results showed no confidence in the city as the vote was 50/50. He further stated that the big issue is the $40 million price tag and the community deserves a robust discussion.

Scott Maxwell shot him down by calling a Point of Order (his favorite thing to do when one of the minority commissioners has the floor) and when he doesn't like hearing what they have to say. A point of order may be raised if the rules appear to have been broken. Maxwell just didn't want to listen to any thing that might detract from getting this bond passed. No rules were broken. This meeting was for discussion. There was no vote on anything and the bully vice mayor was allowed to raise his ugly head once again. Can we please get a Parliamentarian?

Brent Whitfield, an engineer with ADA Engineering, gave a brief PowerPoint presentation on road repairs and resurfacing. The city passed out back-up (it was still not on-line at 5:30pm according to the assistant city clerk and still fully not on-line as of this moment) of all the roads that will be repaired under this new 30 year General Obligation Bond of $40 million, a bond for which they have never told us the final cost with interest.

As Whitfield did in 2013 on the LW 2020 bond, he emphasized the fact that our city roads are not being maintained and that we needed to increase the maintenance and repair budget. Roads last only about 15 years max. Bornstein piped in that they haven't increased the budget due to budgetary constraints. In 2007, our budget for street maintenance was $1.4 million. Through the years, especially 2013, our budget was lowered to $439k. The 2017 budget is within a half million lower of where we were ten years ago. As the city NEVER maintains anything, what can we expect going forward?

We have no idea how long this project will be in effect but we do know that we will keep paying for 30 years. The following are the projected costs for the road repairs in the various districts:

District 1: $11,729,678
District 2: $ 7,365,269
District 3: $14,930,914
District 4: $ 5,474,139

To see the roads with potholes without the cost breakdown, Click here. This is not what was passed out last night.

Some residents in the chamber were hopeful that they would be allowed to speak and turned in blue cards. It didn't happen. This is how this Trio wants to inform the public--no discussion and no public input. Maxwell made a motion to adjourn the meeting and the vote was 3/2 with McVoy and Maier dissenting. We all left the packed chamber after a 40 minute meeting with our heads shaking.

Dorothy Jack's opponent, Shelley Vana, called us "idiots" for having the audacity to stand up for John Prince Park and object to the County approving corporate welfare and bulldozing 100 acres for the Atlanta Braves. Lake Worth Commissioners - Quotes on Sober Homes

Some memorable (paraphrased) quotes regarding Sober Homes, addicts and crime in our neighborhood from last night's commission meeting:

Commissioner Christopher McVoy:  There is an urgency. We can't mess around.  We're not responding.  We need to send a message to make a difference.

Vice Mayor Scott Maxwell:  The Federal government is screwing us with sober homes.  Code enforcement at the State level is failing us.  We need more teeth in Statute 162. Maybe it's time to crack a few eggs.

Mayor Pam Triolo:  Sober Homes (the problems they generate) are escalating faster than we ever thought they would. We need help now!

Wrap-Up of Lake Worth's 2016/2017 Budget

Comment Up

Last night was the wrap-up on the 2016/2017 Budget.  A hearing will be held on September 13 and the 2nd Public Hearing on September 20.  It is on these dates that the public gets to comment. This is cutting it close as the new budget year begins on October 1, 2016.

Essentially, we will be spending more than we make.

With four on the dais being businessmen, only Commissioner Christopher McVoy, a scientist, sounded like one. He doesn't understand why the commission would pass a Beach budget knowing that it will be in the red.  Who does? The answer seems obvious--some want it to fail.  Why would you purposely throw more expenses into the Beach Fund without more revenue to pay for the additional costs?

Commissioner McVoy insisted that the Burton and Associates matrix (a study we paid for but ignored in this instance) be in the record that proved by raising the parking twenty-five cents an hour every three years or ten cents every year, we would stay in the black (if we didn't throw in more expenditures) and that's with the two extra sheriff deputies, one extra full-time lifeguard, keeping four months reserves, keeping the pool opened as it is now and paying back the loan to ourselves at $500,000 a year.

Commissioner Amoroso wants to analyze operations at the pool after six months. Vice Mayor Maxwell still wants to close the pool and by their consensus last night, (voting to add costs without raising revenues) they have intentionally made it difficult to have a profit. If this is how they want to run our beach operations, they need to get the entire beach out of an Enterprise Fund like they did the golf course and allow it all to survive. The Lake Worth beach and pool are our most important assets and what drives tourism to our city.

Regarding our entire operational budget, Non-Controllable Expenses will go up $1,474,000 from the previous year or 66.15% of our general revenues. This includes five new sheriff deputies, two of whom, as mentioned above, will be assigned to the beach (I didn't realize we had so much crime there too),  two other deputies, assignment unknown, and one at the Electric fund. That is a curious one. The total general fund budget now is $32.8 million up from $31.1 million.

Lake Worth General Obligation Road bond amendment

Comment Up

City Manager, Michael Bornstein has said, "The problem with our roads was studied and quantified in 2013, when the City hired an engineering firm to conduct a detailed analysis of all City owned roads.  Using high tech equipment along with actual samples taken by drilling down into the roads, a list from best to worst was created.  The report became the basis for the bond issue (Lake Worth 2020) that went to the voters in 2014.  It failed by 24 votes.  While there are many reasons why the bond did not pass, the fact is the potholes and cracks are still a major problem.  To make matters worse, the roads continue to degrade with each passing season and patching is only a temporary and unsatisfactory band aid.

Moving forward, we will engage in a community-wide discussion on what a road improvement program should look like.  It is our hope that this effort will result in a clear and concise list of projects, how to pay for them, and a timeline on their implementation.  This will be another opportunity for Lake Worth to build on our sense of community and come together for the good of all.

....................
The LW 2020 lost by 25 votes under overwhelming odds--the city had all the cash and clout to pass it.
The City of Lake Worth's administration did everything it could to reverse the count even going so far as to accuse the Supervisor of Elections of a Sunshine violation.
When can the residents get some answers and actually speak to this?
Why did the city reduce the roads maintenance budget from over 1 million a year down to $500k of which only 200k was used for roads?
When will the residents know the total cost of this 30 year bond with interest?
Why do you feel that we need to be educated on what a road improvement program should look like?
There was supposed to be a calculator on the Lake Worth web site for residents to use to determine what they would be paying? Where is it?
As it is only 77 days until the November election, when do we get to ask questions or will it just be about receiving the city's propaganda to grab the cash?

Get out and Vote Republican

"...reflect on the Democratic Party’s candidates who in recent decades were either elected, or nearly elected, president of the United States: Bill Clinton, a lifelong, serial sexual predator; Al Gore, a raving lunatic; John Kerry, who betrayed his fellow Vietnam vets and his country; Barack Obama, a deceitful, America-hating, Marxist radical; and now Hillary Clinton, the most corrupt person ever to run for the White House, accurately described by Pulitzer-winning New York Times columnist and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient William Safire as “a congenital liar.”

Ben Hur

I went to see Ben Hur on opening day on Friday. I had seen the original movie  and had forgotten what it was all about.  It was predominantly an action flick--had to cover my eyes at times during the chariot race, cried when Jesus was on the Cross and felt uplifted when the two "brothers," (the film made them "brothers" but in the original they were childhood friends) Judah Ben Hur, a Prince from Jerusalem and devoted to his faith and his childhood friend, Messala, who believed in the glory of Rome's imperial power, were reunited as "brothers" in the end.

I can't call this a religious movie per se but it is about reconciliation and forgiveness under the worst of circumstances. Jesus was featured several times but his "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do," was a subtle theme. But the ultimate message is exactly what Mike Olive preaches right here in Lake Worth, "Love, not hate."

The only thing I didn't like was the price of the ticket--$13.95.

“Donald Trump’s going to win because in the end the country is not going to reward big banks and big unions and big bureaucracies and big donors and big corruption by voting for a big liar. And in the end, the country is going to say, you know, whatever Trump’s weaknesses may be, he’s a sincere guy trying very hard to get this country back on the right track.”

Palm Beach County Sheriff

Lawrence Gordon for County Commissioner District 7

According to the SunSentinel, "Taylor's record includes votes for every large development project in the west-central portion of the county that could cost taxpayers $100 million for roads, schools and services. That is money the county won't spend on District 7.

The best alternative in this contest is Lawrence Gordon, a retired paralegal/investigator for a law firm and a current member of the Haverhill Town Council. He has the right priorities for the district and the county."

Latest Trump/Clinton Poll

The USC/LATimes Poll started on July 4 taking a cross section of demographics of 3,000 voters each week. Trump still has a long way to go. Even if he increases his margin, he has to win the key states and get the electoral vote. He's not popular with Blacks and Hispanics for some strange reason. The Republican Party is the party that freed the slaves and wants to create jobs. As Dinesh D'Souza says, "The Democrats were also the party of the KKK as well as slavery, and the slave-owning mentality continues to shape the policies of Democratic leaders today."

It's not the popular vote that wins elections.
A little Trivia for the day:
  • In 1824 Andrew Jackson won the popular vote but got less than 50% of the electoral votes. John Quincy Adams became the next president when he was picked by the House of Representatives.
  • In 1876 Samuel Tilden won the popular vote but lost the election when Rutherford B. Hayes got 185 electoral votes to Tilden’s 184.
  • In 1888 Grover Cleveland won the popular vote but lost the election when Benjamin Harrison got 233 electoral votes to Cleveland’s 168.
  • In 2000 Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the election to George Bush. In the most highly contested election in modern history, the U.S. Supreme Court stopped the Florida recount of ballots, giving Bush the stat
