Zika Virus now in Lake Worth

Comment Up

Well, why the heck not? We have everything else bad going for us--a heroin epidemic, Sober Homes, criminals. This just puts the icing on the cake. This woman doesn't even know how she got it and she has not traveled. Mosquitoes can travel up to 100 miles from their larval breeding habitat. If you have the following symptoms, get to a hospital immediately: fever, rash, eye redness, joint pain.

This is very scary and calls for immediate action. A second article I found also says she was tested at JFK, and had trouble walking, had to crawl, with temp of 103.5. We need to be aware that if there is one case, there may also be many more who are not symptomatic. Ideal situation is to prevent any more spread. It is possible but difficult. Our spread should theoretically locally only come from a mosquito biting someone carrying it, then someone else. So we know we have one infected mosquito, hopefully not many more. The time to act is NOW. Their lifespan is only some 2 weeks, so if we can all take precautions just maybe we won't be come a hot bed of transmission like Miami. It's not just pregnant women that should be worried. I had Guillian Barre and was hospitalized X 1 month and varying paralysis for almost a year. This is serious folks.

It was either an illegal or someone brought in live larve from one of those countries.

Lynn, like I say a lot, you can’t believe everything you read on the internet. The Asian Tiger and Yellow Fever Mosquitos, the two vector mosquitos that can transmit the Zika virus are not strong flyers. But they are both here in south Florida in abundance. They usually feed and breed in an area of a ¼ mile or less. However, Zika can also be transmitted by sexual intercourse from a man to a woman and they can travel up to a 100 miles and even more for that kind of exchange. Please, let’s not exaggerate claims to feed the mosquito hysteria. You can play up the sex part all you’d like!

Who's exaggerating?

Lynn, what I meant by “exaggerate” was your statement, “mosquitos can travel up to 100 miles from their larval breeding habitat”. While salt marsh mosquitos “may” fly lengthy distances to find a suitable place to live, is an accurate statement salt marsh mosquitos don’t transmit the Zika virus. I thought I was reading a Slosberg campaign mailer talking about J Clemens.

Don't know about that, Greg, but I read it at http://www.mosquito.org/faq#far
You are the bug expert so I revert to your expertise.
As far as Jeff Clemens goes, Jeff has done a lot of his own BS against Irv...they both deserve each other. Perhaps they can smoke a joint together after medical marijuana passes on the November ballot.

Personally, I think it's a hoax. Where did they diagnose the disease? JFK? How long has she been sick? Since when do you get a virus, and the TV cameras are standing around just waiting for an interview. People will go to any lengths to have their 15 minutes of fame. In this woman's case, I think the 15 minutes is over already.

The woman is unnamed as is necessary to be withing the law. It's called HIPPA, people. Really.
This is not by any means any attempt for 15 minutes of fame. Zika is real, mosquitoes are real. And both are here in Lake Worth.
And I can assure you that both mosquitoes and viruses do not care if you are from another country, legal or illegal, white, black or purple.
Are we really so ignorant that we are trying to make this a Mexican problem? That's called blinded by bigotry. Very sad.

I worry about a lot of things, but Zika is not one of them. Who said anything about Mexicans?

All the Mexicans I know are legal, and some of them were in the 82nd Airborne!

You are a champion. All I can say is Whoopie! Personally, I don't know any Mexicans. I have one friend who was born in Mexico but is an American citizen who has been for 50 years.

The truth remains that Zika is prevalent in Central, South America and Mexico.

Zika is present wherever it has spread and not been eradicated.

Actually the virus has been around since the 1940-50s, named after the Zika forest where it was first isolated in a research station supported by the Rockerfeller foundation. It is only in the past 10 years or so that it has apparently gained virulence and been associated with microcephaly and Guillian Barre paralysis, as it has traveled around the world.

The spread is due to worldwide travel by humans who bring it to another area and are then bitten by a mosquito who then takes the virus with them to bite the next individual. The female is the biter because she needs animal blood to lay eggs. That's why it is so important to deny them a breeding ground--standing water. If they are quickly denied any place to reproduce--the threat of Zika dies out with the mosquitoes.Lifespan some 2 weeks.

Only if you are very vigilant before there is an outbreak. Which is where we are now. One case. Tip of the iceburg. Let's not allow Lake Worth to steer into that iceburg. Then it may pass; otherwise we get to keep it. Which among other things is definitely NOT good for our major industry: tourism. Along with the health of the community.
Thanks,Mary Watson.
