Dollars for Scholars Lake Worth

Comment Up
While we were at a city commission meeting last night, those who are always involved in raising money for needy students were awarding scholarships to 43 students on their way to college in the Fall. Following is the President's message from Dave Cantley, former Principal of Lake Worth High School

DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Forty-three students received a total of $66,500 on May 5 in the school auditorium located in Tommy Hansen Hall.  Thirty-seven Lake Worth High students received $57,000 from the general account and six students received $9,500 from the Barry Grunow Scholarship Account.

The Grunow Scholarship was established to honor Mr. Grunow, a Lake Worth Middle School teacher who was slain in his classroom on the last day of school in 2000.  The Grunow scholarship is available to students in public, private and parochial schools as well as home schooled students.  Recipients must be aspiring teachers.

Lake Worth Dollars for Scholars, a program of Scholarship America, was established in 1999 and awarded $10,000 in its inaugural year.   This year’s awards bring the grand total since 1999 to $902,200.

Members of the board of directors serve on a voluntary basis.  Their dedication to the DFS mission makes it possible for needy students to realize their dream of a college education.

No thanks to city manager Bornstein and attorney Glen Torcivia. These two did their best to destroy Lake Worth high School's funding source for their scholarship program. DISGUSTING !

Many thanks for all the people who help in this worthy cause by giving time and money to needy Lake Worth students. Thanks, Dennis and Doris for all you do.
