Buried markers at the Lake Worth Cemetery

Comment Up

A buried marker

Channel 12 talks about it

Mrs. Watson was literally crying this morning. She says it's a heck of a way to honor our dead, people who lived here, paid taxes, were someone's loved ones and some who even fought for our country. She needs help in finding all of the buried markers. The weeds have taken over and many of the grave stones have tipped or are broken.

This is not acute neglect. This is chronic neglect. Years of chroinic neglect. These people were someone's mothers and husbands, children and infants. They are our founders. They deserve our respect. Graves that have been completely covered up by soil and completely forgotten? Much thanks to channel 12 and this selfless lady who has exposed this travesty.

Over a year ago I call Rochelle Ritchie, a former reporter for WPTV, after I received a call from Mrs. Nancy Updike about the deplorable conditions she found her father in laws grave stone. Two days after the story aired and I organized a group of approximately 15 volunteers who came out and helped me clean up both Pinecrest and the Banks Cemetary in the Osborne community that was in chronic neglect as well.

Here we are a year later and the city can't blame it on a subcontractor now. I received a call from Mrs. Watson yesterday morning, who is a Veteran, as she sobbed standing over a WWII Veteran's grave stone that was desecrated. She asked me for help and I called my buddy Peter Schaller at CBS12 news and explained the history and sent him the link to last years news coverage of the same problem http://youtu.be/fNWfvBjlm9U .

No one going to visit the final resting place of a Loved one should not have to encounter these conditions when they get there.

I wonder if this cemetary were located in College Park or Vernon Heights would it have been allowed to get this bad. Well it is in Genesis neighborhood and I will continue to make sure that it is NOT IGNORED!

Sincerely,
Mark A. Parrilla

Unfortunately, these commissioners and board members are much more interested in illegal banners being hung at The Gulfstream and lying about the heights issue than doing anything about the slum, the blight and the neglect all over this city.
Thanks for all you do, Mark. The entire cemetery looks like an abandoned property. The weeds are cut and that's about it.

We need to demand a fence for our Veterans Cemetery. The ball gets dropped once again in the neighborhood that looks like a third world country! Are we surprised? Wierd how it happens so infrequently in the more afluent areas of our city. Maybe it's that there aren't enough legitimate voters living in the area for them to care enough to do something about the problem. Notice how the areas of our city with the highest voter turn out seem to get consistent service and expeditious responses to calls. When someone in College Park called to report their neighbor about storm shudders on a home and a dirty roof the cancer survivor ends up in special majestrate but when I address a concern of 15 to a home in the Genesis neighborhood, drug sales, blight, delapadated cemetery...if I go on I will get writers cramp...the process is sooooo SLOW and painful like pulling teeth. I have had to purchase a no trespassing sign for an abandoned foreclosed home in the Genesis neighborhood from my own pocket after speaking with the bank and getting them to email the our sheriff dept. giving me permission to secure the home and got the bank to board it up. How much longer do we the residents keep up this exhausing battle before the city responds in kind with getting the job DONE!

Sincerely,

I distinctly remember that they were going to install a fence.

They expect volunteers to do all their jobs! What is up with that??
Just saw a followup on Channel 12 about it and no comments from the Mayor after she went to visit it today. (or did she?)

This is so damn sad. Cut down an 80 year old tree and they want the residents to pay to replace it. Now they want the residents to help with the cemetery. Why don't we just kick them all out and let's run this place ourselves?

If we organize volunteers to do city staff jobs then why are we paying the staff that is responsible for taking care of the cemetery. WOW! That is just a slap in the face. Staff cuts down a tree without permission and we are asked to buy $2.00 pavers for $100.00 to raise funds for a tree that we already paid for with taxpayer money. Why not do a weekly payroll deduction from the two staff members responsible? Why punish the residents of Lake Worth? No instead ask the taxpayers to pay for it a second time and Commissioner Amoroso presented the idea like it was the best thing since sliced bread. Of course he had to attempt to pluck at everyones heart strings by stating he already bought one for his dead Mother. Nice re-election campaign launch speech. He could have kept that to himself if it was really about honoring his Mom and not for political gain...they stop at nothing obviously. They have gotten too used to volunteers fixing their shortcomings...ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

Sincerely,
Mark A. Parrilla
